Headlights — high & low beam functional

Required from sunset to sunrise and when visibility less than 150 m (MVA s. 4.01)

Tail lights, brake lights & reverse lights working

Walk-around check — use reflections or ask a second person to confirm brake lights

Left & right turn signals functional (front & rear)

Check all four corners — one failed signal is a ticketable defect

Hazard flashers operational

Required for breakdown or slow-moving vehicle situations

No warning lights on — dash clear

Check-engine, oil pressure, temperature, ABS, SRS — any lit light must be diagnosed

Steering & Suspension

Steering wheel free play within limit

Max 50 mm (2") free play for power steering — excessive play = out of service

No broken or cracked leaf springs

CVSE OOS item — a broken main leaf on any axle grounds the vehicle immediately

Frame — no visible cracks or loose mounts

Inspect visible frame rails — cracks near cross-member welds or body mounts are critical

Safety Equipment

Fire extinguisher on board & charged

Min. 1 kg ABC dry chemical required in BC commercial vehicles (MVA Reg. s. 7.03)

3 emergency warning triangles on board

Required by NSC — must be placed 30 m, 60 m, and 90 m behind breakdown

First aid kit present

BC Reg. requires a first aid kit for commercial vehicle operations — check contents are complete

Body & Cargo Area

Cargo doors latch and seal properly

Doors must close fully and latch securely — open door in transit is a MVA violation

Cargo properly secured — no shifting risk

NSC Std. 10 — load must be secured against forward, rearward, and lateral movement

No sharp protrusions or damaged body panels

Body damage that could injure pedestrians or damage other vehicles must be reported

Record dash warning lights that appeared — engine, ABS, temperature, oil, DEF

Brake performance was normal throughout trip

Note any fade, pulling, grinding noise, or extended stopping distance

No unusual noises — engine, drivetrain, or body

Knocking, grinding, squealing, or rattling during the run must be recorded

No collisions, impacts, or cargo incidents

Any collision must be reported to carrier immediately — MVA s. 67 reporting thresholds apply

Post-Trip Walk-Around

Tires inspected for post-run damage

Check for heat bulges, cuts, or flats after the run — heat can cause delayed blowouts

No fluid leaks under vehicle (post-run)

Check ground after parking — oil, coolant, or brake fluid must be reported immediately

Lights & electrical still functional

Quick walk-around check — lights that were working at start may have failed on trip

Cargo area clean — no freight remaining

Confirm all pieces unloaded, no abandoned items, doors closed and latched

Body damage inspected & photographed if new

New dents, scrapes, or damage must be documented before next driver takes the vehicle

Trip Report & Handoff

Trip inspection report completed & signed

NSC Std. 13 — driver must sign off and carrier retains for 6 months minimum

All defects reported to carrier / dispatcher

Any defect affecting safe operation must be repaired before next dispatch

Vehicle keys secured & handed off properly

Keys to dispatch or secured location — never left in unattended vehicle
